International Sex Worker Rights Day began on March International Sex Worker Rights Day began on March 3, 2001, when the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a Kolkata-based organization representing more than 50,000 workers, organized a festival attended by over 25,000 people. The event took place despite pressure from prohibitionist groups urging the government to revoke the workers’ permit.

Since then, organizations around the world have observed International Sex Worker Rights Day annually.
